Root canal therapy can make the difference between keeping a tooth and losing it. Unfortunately, if you’re suffering from a severe tooth infection and pain, this infection can eventually lead to tooth extraction if not treated. Many people don’t like the idea of root canal therapy, but with modern technology and care, this procedure isn’t as uncomfortable as you might think. And it’s a lot less costly and complicated than extracting the tooth and seeking tooth replacement.

Root canal therapy treats infections of the nerve that runs through your tooth, which is also called the pulp. The disease usually gets into the tooth through an extensive cavity broken through to the chamber where the pulp lives. Root canal therapy has a high success rate, helping you keep your smile intact and saving you the problems that come with tooth loss.

When would I need root canal therapy?

A root canal therapy procedure becomes necessary when the pulp, or soft tissue inside the tooth’s root canal area, gets inflamed or infected from an injury or infection. The most common signs of root canal damage we see in our office are:

  • A persistent and lingering toothache

  • Tooth sensitivity to heat or cold

  • Chewing or pressure pain

  • Swelling in the patient’s cheek, jaw, or throat

  • A tooth that suddenly becomes discolored and usually is much darker than surrounding teeth

  • A constant mouth pain that prevents or disturbs sleep

Rarely, a tooth can experience root damage without any noticeable symptoms. In these cases, the root canal nerves are likely totally dead. Regular checkups will ensure that the teeth stay healthy, and we will detect caries early – before root canal therapy is necessary.
